General description: We will spend most of the month leading discussions on sermons, and close with a discussion about the church service as a whole. We'll go through how to come up with topics, develop them, and how to make them meaningful for the congregation, based on a workshop program from Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Stockton. Discussions should be beneficial for all, not just those who want to give sermons. During the month, we will discuss what kinds of sermons people want to hear or deliver, as well as what the congregation likes about the sermons they've heard in the past, or would like to see more of, in future sermons. Our goal is for everyone to come away feeling like they can conceive of, create, and deliver meaningful services.
August 2
Title "What makes a good church service?"
Description: We will take what we've discovered about putting together a sermon, and apply it to the rest of the service. What are the other parts of the service that relate to the sermon? How do we go about choosing opening words, readings, hymns, and closing words? What are some strategies for designing the service?
