Worship Committee Guidelines
The Worship Committee is a ten member committee, one of whom serves as chairperson and one of whom organizes and/or facilitates the pre-service forums. The chairperson of the committee is responsible for filling all of the Sunday Worship Service speaker slots throughout the church year (unless the monthly coordinator/lay leader volunteers to choose his/her own speakers during their month) Sept. through May, either with an outside speaker, or with a member of the congregation. The chairperson is also responsible for finding individuals to facilitate the Summer Forums, June through August. Nine of the committee members, including the chairperson, serve for one month during the church year as the monthly worship coordinator.
The church secretary is responsible for sending the calendar listing of Sunday speakers and musicians to the monthly coordinator prior to the beginning of each month. The church secretary also mails, or e-mails, a blank Order of Service to each speaker for an upcoming month with instructions to “please fill in and return to the church secretary by the Wednesday prior to your service”.
The monthly worship coordinator is asked to make certain the speaker’s information/topic is given to our church secretary in a timely manner during their month. (With this information our secretary publishes the speakers/titles in the monthly “VOICE” newsletter, sends it to our web master for the church web site, takes it to the Sioux City Journal for a press release ,if applicable, sends song titles to the musicians to give them adequate time to prepare, and types/prints the weekly Order of Service.) The monthly coordinator is required to, either, serve as lay-leader (if one is required by the speaker), or to find another individual to serve as lay-leader if they are unable to do so themselves. Their duties during their month may also include helping to obtain additional readers or “props” for the Sunday services, depending on a particular speaker’s preferences.
This committee maintains a printed, laminated, copy of “Speaker’s Words”, posted on the podium (also on the piano for the benefit of the musician), that both speakers and lay-leaders may use to help them transition through an entire service. (This is not a formal agenda that must be followed to the letter, but only added as a tool to aid speakers and lay leaders who feel this will benefit them.) Additional paper copies are available under the podium that can be filled in with service specific information (page numbers, etc.) prior to a service. We have a check list of items that a coordinator or lay-leader should attend to prior to each service.
The list includes:
Therefore, ongoing congregational input and suggestions continue to be welcomed and encouraged.
