Social Action Guidelines:
Procedures and Calendar for Activities
GROCERY CART SUNDAY
- Last Sunday of each month.
- Church secretary sends an e-mail reminder and puts it in the Voice
- Previous recipients include women’s shelters, Friendship House, Center for
Siouxland.
GUEST AT YOUR TABLE
– Sunday before Thanksgiving. Guest at Your Table has been a UUSC and UU
thanksgiving tradition since 1975. UUs come together to give thanks by giving back.
Through this tradition, Unitarian Universalist communities celebrate the worth and dignity of all people and learn how to put these values into action. Suggestions for Guest at Your Table worship services http://www.uusc.org/ia/gayt/packet.html and an order form for GAYT 2006-2007 materials http://www.uusc.org/ia/gayt/order.html are available online.
JUSTICE SUNDAY
- Each spring, in conjunction with the UUSC (Unitarian Universalist Service
Committee) http://www.uusc.org/ia/justice_sunday, UU congregations
nationwide stand together, and set aside one Sunday for worship and
education focused on one pressing human rights issue.
CROP Walk
- Walk on October 14
- Meeting on October 9 at Morningside Church
PFLAG of Siouxland
- Maintain library downstairs in Safford Room of the Church.
- Attend area meetings of PFLAG which meet each month on the 3rd
Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m., usually at the UU church in the Kane Room or other area churches. Additional information available at http://www.siouxlandpride.net/PFLAG.htm
INTERFAITH RESOURCES
- Attend area monthly meeting held in various Sioux City churches the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m.
- Help with Interfaith's main fundraiser, Interfaith's Food Festival held during October each year.
THE SOUP KITCHEN
- Serve at the soup kitchen once every three months.
FAIR TRADE COFFEE
- Purchase fair trade coffee to sell to Pierce Street Coffee Works and to anyone else who is interested, to sell to church members, and to use for Sunday coffee hours.
- Church Secretary orders, receives the order, and calls Pierce Street Coffee
Works to notify them the order has arrived. They pick up the order at the church.
Currently there are no other regular sales to local businesses.
SIOUXLAND PEACE COALITION
- Participate in Siouxland Coalition for Peace and Justice's public events. Meeting and event dates are listed on the web page at: http://siouxlandpeacecoalition.com/
FORUMS
- Organize for congregation and wider public.
DEVELOP INFORMED LEADERS
- Develop leadership among youth.
CHANGE FOR CHANGE
- Respond to requests for financial assistance from Siouxland residents.
- Contribute to social change organizations.
- Consult with youth in the church regarding contributions.
LEIF ERIKSON PARK CLEANUP
-Contact the Sioux City Park and Recreation Office at 712-279-6126 to arrange for
cleanup dates and secure the trash bags which they provide.
GENERAL ISSUES
Work to promote the ideals of the UUA Member Congregations;
• A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
• The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
• The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
• Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are
a part.
